AFT: #AFTVotes Canvassing Event Kicks Off in Savannah

The Georgia Federation of Teachers (AFT) kicked off its canvassing campaign Dec. 21 with a rally at the Machinists (IAM) building in Savannah to get out the vote for Warnock and Ossoff. AFT President Randi Weingarten and Jerome Irwin, president of the A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI) Savannah chapter, spoke on the importance of voting in the Jan. 5 Senate runoffs, and how Warnock and Ossoff are the right choices for Georgia’s working people.

"Let’s be real about what’s going on here,” Weingarten said. “You’ve got two current senators, who during this period of COVID, figured out ways to enrich themselves as Georgians were getting sick. And continue to get sick. But what you’re doing is you are doing what John Lewis did, frankly, on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Lewis represented Georgians in Washington. He walked the walk. He fought for people. You’re fighting for people. These two senators, they don’t give a damn about regular people. They haven’t from the moment they’ve been in the Senate, and they won’t if they get back to the Senate."
